In partnership with the Novolhar Association, we promoted a cultural contest in female prisons

In partnership with the Associação Novolhar, IDDD carried out, during 2005, the project The Right to Look, a cultural contest involving prison establishments in the state of São Paulo.

All women and girls held in custody that year were invited to participate in the initiative, being able to choose the area that most interested them, including painting, photography and literature (poetry and short stories). Among the 680 women enrolled, 120 were selected in each of the three categories, with a total of 360 participants.

On December 19, 2005, the project awarded 18 participants, six in each category, in a ceremony held at the Tomie Ohtake Institute – in which the winners could be present. In addition to the prizes, they were awarded professional courses and subscriptions to specialized magazines for a specified period. Along with the winners, many of the participants received an honorable mention for the results of their work. All the works, as well as the project’s history, were brought together in one publication.
